Victoria Wittmer is a contemporary artist based in Innsbruck, Austria. Her practice moves between painting, collage, photography, found materials and written language.
Starting from close observation, personal photographs, memories and collected materials, she explores how perception changes through layering, displacement and transformation. Her works investigate the point at which familiar images and everyday materials lose their original function and begin to carry new meaning.
Earlier states are rarely erased completely. They remain present as traces, structures and hidden layers within the finished work.
BACKGROUND
Wittmer’s artistic practice is informed by a professional background in the medical field and an extended engagement with human anatomy and anatomical structures.
This experience has sharpened her attention to form, proportion, surface and the relationship between visible structures and what lies beneath them. These observations continue to influence her approach to perception, materiality and transformation.
ARTISTIC PRACTICE
Wittmer works through a process of observation, accumulation and transformation. Painting is combined with collage, photographic fragments and found materials such as paper, wire, packaging and other everyday objects.
Through layering, overpainting, removal and repositioning, materials are detached from their original context and allowed to acquire a different visual and symbolic function.
Her work is concerned less with reproducing an image than with the process through which meaning emerges, disappears and returns in altered form.
